Description

About two months ago I was in a props studio in east Manchester talking about London Comic con guest lists with Simon and Rob from RS Props when they asked me if I would be interested in doing a sculpting demonstration at the upcoming event.... Well I naturally said YES!!! and then thought about it... Who would be at this event I asked? one or two industry people could be attending I was told so it could be a good thing to do and may be get noticed...? Yes that sounded good to me but then I was told that the Master sculptor (Brian 1 Muir) would be there, sitting somewhere close to my location...

That didn't sound so good.. lets face it.. If you are treading the boards for your first time ... you may not want Sir Alec Guinness watching you from the front row... or should I say the spectre of Sir Alec but you know what I'm talking about....
I thought Paul what are you thinking!, this guy has worked on the finest films you have ever seen..Alien, Clash of the Titans, Superman, Raiders of the lost Ark, The spy who loved Me, Dragonslayer and of course Star Wars.... to name but a few, I was really thinking that I must be mad...NOT TO DO IT :-) when you get the chance to sculpt next to Brian Muir you don't pass that one by...

I was worried that I might not be able to concentrate and the public seeing something that is not a finished piece of work could be risky... :-/
Putting all that aside I focused on my subject...? what was my subject guys??? .

Well as the weeks passed a number of things were suggested but nothing was decided upon until about three days to go... Yoda was picked to be my subject matter, I liked the choice because I have never attempted Yoda as a 1/1 scale sculpt before.
The guys at RS Props told me I would have all the photos and actual measurements of the screen used Yoda I would need as well as all the clay (oil based) and a place to sculpt in full view of the public..in other words they were throwing me to the wolves with a lion at my back in the shape of Brian 1 Muir... I'm not called Lionback for nothing Very Happy

All I can say is I had a great time and the guys provided all they promised apart from those pesky measurements!!!, I had to take an informed choice on how large to make Yoda based upon the fact that it was a hand puppet and the information that a base ball cap would fit the top of the head perfectly...not to sure about that as a guide but I did my best... this is a few pics of the various stages threw the two day at Comic-on, its still not finished but I think its well under way....
